Olypics cancellation should not be a topic for the sake of the athletes

Could the Tokyo 2020 Olympics be canceled?
IOC member Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski said the possible cancellation of the Summer Games should not be part of the discussion as they are leaving no stone unturned in turning the event into a success despite the global outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The deadly pulmonary disease had thrown the Olympic schedule in disarray.

The Games were supposed to open on 24 July of this year, but the global virus outbreak forced the IOC and the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to cancel the event to 23 July to 8 August of next year.

It was only the fourth time for the modern Olympics to be canceled since 1896.

The first time it was called off was during World War I in 1916 and twice during the World War II in 1940 and 1944 as athletes, especially those from Europe and Asia, were not prepared to see action in a high-level competition.

Now, with virus cases surpassing the 10-million mark, talks have it that the IOC is contemplating the idea of totally scrapping the Olympics with senior IOC member John Coates hinting that they would come up with a decision in October.

With that residents of Tokyo expressed their sentiment on the Summer Games with the majority — or 51.7 percent — voting that the event should either be reset or completely scrapped.

Cojuangco-Jaworski, a gold medalist in the Busan Asian Games in 2002, said the IOC is still carefully plotting all possible scenarios and pulling out the all stops just to push through with the Summer Games.

“Even scenario-planning is being done to make sure that all hands are on deck so that it can happen and commence well,” said Cojuangco-Jaworski, the eldest daughter of former Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco in a recent webinar organized by the local Olympic council.
